This prestigious club's
history dates back to August 13 1926, in the Central Argentino Railway Station,
when a group of "Englishmen from the railway" under Mr. Mac Donald's lead, had
the first Olivos Golf Club directory meeting.
Golf, as many other sports in Argentina, started to develop with the English
residents' initiative.
These golf
enthusiasts' bold efforts began to bear fruit a little time after 1926, and they
built an 18 hole course with facilities in the Olivos area. On April 1928 their
new club became affiliatedto the Argentine Golf Association, and on May 19 of
that same year the Argentine President Mr. Marcelo T. de Alvear inaugurated its
facilities and became one of its first members. He also made the first shot,
with an iron 3 handed by the first golf professional Mr. Cruickshank. This iron
was exhibited as a trophy for many years in the club.
As the years passed the club kept growing, so a new Club House was inaugurated
and irrigation was installed in the fairways, which made this course one of the
most technologically advanced of its times. Thus this course became practically
the best in the country.
In 1951, before the club was expropriated, the board decided to sell 9 holes so
that they could buy new land and rebuild it farther away. This was a hard
decision to make, since the Board, like the founders of this Club, had to
overcome many obstacles.
Mr.
Luther Koontz designed two 18 hole courses, the new country was started as well
as the forestation of the new field, the whole task was finally finished in
1952.
Over time all the difficulties were mastered, the course was improved and the
Country Club took shape, so that it its renowned position in the golfer's world
was restored .
The
course has currently 27 holes and it is considered one of the best in South
America for its design and beauty. Olivos Golf has been host to international
tournaments such as the Masters Tilt which has been played for years, receiving
the best European and American players. It was also host to World Amateur
Championship in 1972, as well as the Republic Open and the Copa de los Andes
among others
